Action Alert: Tucker Park at Risk
A local developer has written to council wishing to purchase Tucker Park from the City of Saint John. Tucker Park is one of the few undeveloped pieces of green space remaining along the lower Kennebecasis River. It overlooks three islands. It contains a small, beautiful, sheltered cove with a fine sandy beach. This beach is used and enjoyed by many people of all ages for swimming, picnics and shoreline walks. People of all ages use the park including families, students from the nearby university and seniors. Tucker Park is a green space in a sea of surrounding development. Nearly every park in Saint John is under attack or degradation by people and industries who want public parkland for their own use or commercial purposes. The natural environment and people’s access to beaches must be maintained. We must not allow our parks and green spaces to be privatized. We encourage everyone to send a strong message to the Mayor and Council of the City of Saint John; Tucker Park must not be sold.
