Immediate clean up required
of derelict Campobello
fish plant
Fundy
Baykeeper has written
to Environment Minister
Trevor Holder requesting immediate clean up of the Old Jackson Bros
Fish Plant
at Wilson’s Beach
Campobello, which has been
abandon for several years. The large wooden structure, which sits on
wood
pilings, is collapsing onto the beach threatening to discharge its
contents and
itself into the Bay of Fundy.
The
fish plant and wharf are in violation of both the Unsightly Premises
Act and
the Clean Environment Act.
In
recent years Fundy
Baykeeper and many
community-based
organizations have been working hard to clean up the Bay of Fundy and its
beaches. “The
last thing we need is more large industrial debris in the Bay of Fundy and strewn
across the
beaches of Passamaquoddy
Bay”, said David Thompson.
The
need for clean up was brought to the attention of the NB Department of
Environment over a year ago, by Fundy
Baykeeper. No action
has been taken
to remove the structure. and the
situation with the fish plant has continued to deteriorate.
“With
the fall storm season now approaching immediate action is required now
by the
Environment Minister to have this derelict structure and its contents
removed
and properly disposed of” said Thompson.
