PUBLIC FORM
HIGHLIGHTS SAFETY RISKS OF LNG. Over 400
people crowded into the Anglican Church in St. Andrews, New Brunswick
on
Wednesday, Aug 30, for a public forum on liquified natural gas
(LNG)
organized by the group Save Passamaquoddy Bay Canada (SPBC).
Guest
speaker was Clifford Goudey, research engineer at the Massachusetts
Institute
of Technology (MIT). In a 45-minute power point presentation,
Prof.
Goudey deconstructed the safety claims of both LNG project proponents
and their
regulators, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Read more…
CLEAN UP OF
AQUACULTURE CAGES, MILL COVE BOCABEC. Efforts of the Fundy Baykeeper have resulted in the clean-up of about 2 dozen
plastic aquaculture cages and piles of aquaculture netting and rope,
which were
illegally dumped at Mill Cove and Holt’s Point Beach.

ORGANIC AND
UNCONTAINED DEBRIS FOUND ONSITE AT CARDS AQUACULTURE. Fundy Baykeeper investigated the Cards Aquaculture Products
Ltd. site in Pennfield, along #1 highway near
Latang estuary, as a
result of public complaints. After finding piles of organic material
(marine
growth) and considerable amounts of uncontained debris, such as:
fibreglass
insulation, pieces of Styrofoam, plastic sheeting, old lumber, and
broken and
used plastic piping, David Thompson promptly admitted photographs of
these items
along with
a letter to Minister of the Environment, Trevor Holder. The letter
requested that
prompt
action be taken to clean up the site. We have now been informed that
the New
Brunswick Department of Environment will investigate and ensure the
site will
be brought into environmental compliance.

CERTIFICATE OF
APPRECIATION. Fundy Baykeeper presented
Ross Thompson with a certificate of appreciation for his help with the
annual
Musquash paddle. His help has been vital to the event’s success this
year
as well
as in past years. Thanks for all your hard work Ross!

BAYKEEPER AND LNG AT
ST. ANDREWS FARMERS MARKET. Every Thursday this summer, the Fundy Baykeeper staffed an information table at the St.
Andrews Farmers Market to inform the
public of LNG and Bay of Fundy issues.

LARGE CHUNKS OF
STYROFOAM FLOATING IN BAY. On a number of occasions, during routine
patrol, Baykeeper discovered large pieces of Styrofoam floating in Head
Harbour
Passage and St. Andrews Bay (source
unknown). These were taken aboard the Baykeeper boat and brought to
shore for
disposal. On one occasion nearly half a boat load of large Styrofoam
pieces
were picked up.

NAVY ISLAND STEWARDS TRAINING SESSION. Fundy Baykeeper held a training session at the beginning of
August to teach new stewards how to keep a watchful eye on our local
shoreline.
The session included tips on what to look for when monitoring a piece
of
shoreline, the importance of listening to those with concerns about the
Bay,
and shoreline clean up.
