Fundy
Baykeeper Log #12
August 25, 2005

Musquash Paddle
On August 20 the Fundy Baykeeper
held the seventh annual Musquash
Paddle. Two-dozen people paddled seven miles through the Musquash
marshes to Black Beach to get a first hand view of the proposed
Musquash Marine Protected Area. The Conservation Council of New
Brunswick has been working for over seven years to have the Musquash
Estuary designated as a Marine Protected Area. Fundy Baykeeper
expects to see Musquash officially protected within the next few months.

LNG Update
Over the past several weeks Dave
Thompson has taken
many people out on the Baykeeper boat to view the two proposed LNG
sites in Passamaquoddy Bay and Head Harbour Passage first hand. Head
Harbour
Passage, is the narrow channel which the huge LNG tankers would have to
pass through to arrive at the proposed terminals. Among those who went
out
in the Baykeeper boat were reporters from the CBC, Homeport News,
Telegraph Journal, and local town councillors.

Marine Debris Update
There has been a partial clean
up of large aquaculture debris on
Pendleton Island by industry, after documentation and media work was
done
by Fundy Baykeeper. However, large piles of netting, bags, rope, parts
of plastic cages, and other debris remained to be cleaned up.

Styrofoam
During recent patrols in Head
Harbour Passage, St. Andrews Harbour, and
Chamcook large pieces of Styrofoam were found floating on the water.
These were picked up and brought ashore in the Baykeeper boat. On at
least three occasions, birds were seen pecking at the Styrofoam. We
urge those on the water who see large pieces of Styrofoam to pick
them up and bring them ashore.

Duck Cove, Saint John
When a large amount of litter
drifted
ashore on the beach, Fundy Baykeeper
took clean-up action. The debris consisted of oil containers, chunks of
Styrofoam, bottles, and food packaging that appeared to have been
dumped
from vessels in the Bay of Fundy.

Goodbye To Our Summer Intern
Our summer intern Becky Burns
has finished her three month stay with us. We were very lucky to have
her, and we are grateful for the tremendous work she put in on
nitrogen-loading modelling of Bay of Fundy estuaries. We wish her luck
in the future.
