Spoon Island Update

The Fundy Baykeeper investigated into rumours that Spoon Island in Oak Bay was slated to be clear cut. The Fundy Baykeeper visited the area by boat and video taped the island. The owners of the island were contacted by the media and denied that the island was to be cut.

LNG Update

With two LNG terminals proposed for Mill Cove near Robbinston, Maine (just across the St. Croix estuary from St. Andrews) and the other at Split Rock, Pleasant Point, Maine, the Fundy Baykeeper has started a Stop LNG campaign. At Thursday's Farmers Market in St. Andrews, we set up a table and distributed Stop LNG flyers, which  received great support from both residents and tourists. A reporter from ATV News in Saint John  interviewed MP Greg Thompson as well as Fundy Baykeeper David Thompson at the market on July 21. The Baykeeper is also promoting a letter-writing campaign to show cabinet ministers that our community opposes the passage of LNG tankers through Head Harbour Passage. Names, titles, and addresses/fax numbers of cabinet ministers can be found on the Baykeeper site in the campaigns section. Write a letter and show your opposition to the proposals. Also keep an eye out for Stop LNG buttons, which are being produced.

Baykeeper Monitoring Aquaculture Debris

Aquaculture DebrisMore aquaculture debris has turned up on Back Beach, Pendleton Island, a nature preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Sections of two large aquaculture cages now rest on the shore of Back Beach along with a new assortment of rope entanglements, pieces of Styrofoam, and assorted plastics. Also, large nylon sacks were found embedded into the beach, and a huge net embedded in the beach that was reported to both the Provincial Government and the aquaculture industry the last two years, has yet to be removed. The Baykeeper has alerted to the marine debris problem on our beaches, and photographs submitted by Baykeeper were published in the July 25, 2005 Telegraph Journal.
