Another LNG Terminal Proposed for Passamaquoddy Bay

As if one LNG terminal weren’t enough, now a second developer, unrelated to Quoddy Bay LNG which is promoting an LNG terminal at Split Rock near Eastport (moved there from Gleason Cove), is proposing a huge LNG facility at Mill Cove near Robbinston, Maine. This is directly across the St. Croix River from St. Andrews. The company is calling itself Downeast LNG and its promoters are out of Washington, DC. They have said they would be holding meetings in St. Andrews, Deer Island and Campobello, and probably other Canadian communities as part of their public relations strategy. They are very skilled communicators, unlike the Quoddy Bay LNG group. The Baykeeper has visited and videotaped the site by boat. Watch for a ‘NO LNG” button campaign leading up to these meetings, and plan on wearing your opinion on your chest.

Baykeeper Participates in Sail-a-bration

With four passengers on board, the Baykeeper joined nearly 50 other boats of all sizes and description at Head Harbour, Campobello on July 3 to celebrate the West Isles – Passamaquoddy area and state our collective opposition to LNG development here.

Spoon Island, Oak Bay

The Fundy Baykeeper has heard that the heavily wooded and beautiful Spoon Island, located in Oak Bay, has been slated for clear-cutting. Since it is private land, there are few levers available to prevent cutting. However there are some rules for protecting fish habitat that would come into play. In a recent trip to Oak Bay, we photographed and videotaped the island, pointing out how clear-cutting would destroy the island’s steep banks and result in heavy erosion into the bay. Because the soil is thin, the island would never be the same again. Stay tuned for more information.

Bayside Quarry

The Baykeeper continued investigating of the Bayside port and quarry, documenting work being done loading aggregate onto a New York bound freighter. Wheel loaders ferry gravel around the quarry while large conveyor belts load ships or deposit excess gravel in storage piles. Most of the operation is shielded from sight by a row of trees however, making it hard to analyze the entire production. Alerted by a recent order from the government to the quarry to remove tailings from the Chamcook watershed, the Baykeeper is investigating for any other environmental infractions. We are also concerned about expansion of the quarry operations.
