Raw Sewage will continue to flow into Saint John Harbour, in violation of the federal Fisheries Act.

Despite all the hoopla around Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to Saint John in March to address the clean-up of 16,000,000 litres of raw sewage dumped into the harbour every day, nothing of worth has materialized.  The federal budget brought down on May 2nd did not include the $44 million which is the expected federal share of the nearly $90 million project.  All we will see from the feds and the Province this year will be a few million dollars directed towards pumping stations and pipes.  Yet there is no money to build the treatment plant to which these pipes would be connected!  Premier Lord has committed $20 million to the project, but not this year.

Every year we delay, the worse the problem gets.  And every day raw sewage flows into the harbour is another violation of the federal Fisheries Act.  It’s time to raise the stakes on this issue.  Let Prime Minister Harper know you want $44 million this year for Saint John Harbour.  E-mail him at: Harper.S@parl.gc.ca.

We will keep you apprised of the Baykeeper’s next steps on this critical issue.
