Government sells out on Endangered Species!
July 2006

The last remaining undeveloped shoreline along the Lower Kennebecasis River at Boar's Head, in Milledgeville, has been sold by the government to a developer for a residential housing development. This decision was made following reassurances that sensitive areas at Boar's Head would be preserved. Baykeeper David Thompson is disappointed that the sale went through without provisions to protect endangered species which exist on the property. Baykeeper will continue to explore avenues to protect the most sensitive areas along shorelines and the habitats of endangered species which exist at Boar's Head.

Boar's Head Development -Millidgeville

June 2006

Baykeeper David Thompson met with Hon. Bev Harrison, NB Supply and Services Minister, and Hon. Trevor Holder, Minister of Environment, last month to discuss the potential sale of land at Boar’s Head in Millidgeville, Saint John.  Our message to them:  Keep Boar’s Head in public hands and protect it as critical undeveloped land in this urban, industrialized landscape.

Owned by the Province (aka you and I), this spectacular 70 ha (170 acre) property is located at the junction of the St. John River and the Kennebecasis Bay.  It is the last piece of undeveloped land along the lower Kennebecasis / St. John River system. It is home to several endangered and rare plant species, headland cliffs used by bald eagles and osprey, and one of the last points of public access to the river.

A subdivision developer has an option to buy Boar’s Head to extend the existing housing development at Cedar Point.  This would destroy one of the few remaining coastal gems left in the city boundaries.

The option on the land expires soon so the government is poised to act.  Either the developer will be allowed to exercise his option to purchase the property, or the government will let it expire.

You can help save Boar’s Head.  Contact Hon. Trevor Holder and Hon. Bev Harrison to tell them you want Boar’s Head to remain public land and to be protected from development.  If they know the public cares about this land, then they will do the right thing.
