When Gulf Operators, a
J.D. Irving owned company, proposed to open a gravel pit near a salt
mash in the Parish of Simonds, Fundy Baykeeper responded to protect the
delicate salt marsh eco-system. A large concern was that the noise from
the operation would disturb the large amount of water fowl in the
nearby marsh. Since over 80 percent of the salt marshes along the Bay
of Fundy have been filled in, David argued that further operations near
the endangered marshes should be stopped. The response for the
Department of Environment was to limit intrusions into the marsh. Not
satisfied with the action by the provincial government, the Baykeeper
continues to monitor the issue along with the local residents to ensure
that the situation does not deteriorate further.
